Stratagem Mac App
Position: Sole Designer
What did you set out to achieve with this design project? To create an app for tracking projects, free from the distractions of the browser. By being a native mac app we could do a lot of interesting things (like using native notifications) that web based apps can’t do.
What decisions did you make that helped you achieve that goal? When it came to the visuals of this app we wanted to make it feel like a powerful app that could handle any task you threw at it, but at the same time feel easy to use. A lot of my time was spent in user testing, in order to refine the UI and make sure it could handle anything users threw at it.
What challenges did you have / what made it difficult to design this? Project Management apps are inherently complex. Also, everyone has a different opinion on how they should work. Taking all that complexity and packaging it in a app that feels light is extremely difficult. This was my primary challenge.
If you had the opportunity to go back and make a different design decision, what would you change? If I could go back, I think I’d start with an iOS app. Starting on the desktop gave me a lot of room for complex flows. I think the constraint of iOS would have been good for the app. It would have helped me refine my work even further.
